The Bharathiraja & Raja partnership

From Kadalora Kavithaigal (1986) to Karuththamma (1994). Kadalora Kavithaigal is the one most viewers reach for. The unfolded closed with Karuththamma in 1994.

It started with Kadalora Kavithaigal (1986).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Kadalora Kavithaigal; the 1990s to Karuththamma. Bharathiraja directed every film; Raja acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Bharathiraja didn't want to cast Raja in Vedham Pudhithu (1987). He thought Raja's star image would clash with the raw village setting. Raja personally called him and said, 'I'll shave my moustache and wear a lungi. Just give me the role.' That phone call sealed the deal.
  • On the sets of Vedham Pudhithu, Bharathiraja would make Raja rehearse a single dialogue 15-20 times before the camera rolled. Raja, known for his spontaneous style, later admitted this was the first time a director made him 'unlearn' his mass hero mannerisms. The result? Raja's most restrained performance till then.
  • Karuththamma (1994) directly launched the career of actress Sangita. She was a newcomer, and Bharathiraja specifically paired her with Raja to give her 'instant credibility' with family audiences. She went on to become a leading heroine in the 90s — all because this duo took a chance on her.
  • During the shoot of Captain Magal (1993), Raja would cook biryani for the entire crew every Sunday. Bharathiraja later said in an interview that those Sundays were the only days the unit didn't fight over creative differences. The food kept the peace.
  • Raja once said about Bharathiraja: 'He is the only director who made me cry on screen without using glycerin. He just talked to me about my father for five minutes before the shot.' This was during the climax of Vedham Pudhithu.
  • In Karuththamma, Bharathiraja deliberately shot Raja's close-ups with a 50mm lens — no filters, no soft focus. He wanted every wrinkle and sweat drop visible. Raja initially hated it, but after seeing the rushes, he told the director, 'You've made me look like a real man, not a film star.'
