• Smita Patil personally recommended Girish Karnad to director Jabbar Patel for 'Umbartha' (1982). She had already signed on and wanted a co-star who could match her intensity in Marathi and Hindi. Karnad was hesitant about doing a Hindi film, but she convinced him over chai at her Pune home.
• In 'Umbartha', Karnad deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery to match Smita's pauses. He later said she made him 'earn every line' because she listened with her whole body — he couldn't rush through a scene the way he did with other actors.
• During the shoot of 'Sutradhar' (1987), Karnad and Patil would spend hours after pack-up discussing Marathi theatre. She was preparing for a stage comeback and he gave her notes on Brechtian techniques. They never told the press about these sessions.
• Karnad once said about Patil: 'She didn't act with you — she acted at you. You had to fight back or disappear. I chose to fight.' He said this in a 1999 interview with India Today, years after her death.
• Their only commercially successful collaboration, 'Umbartha', directly inspired a 1995 Tamil remake called 'Mogamul' starring Revathi. The remake's director credited the original's 'quiet power' to the way Karnad and Patil never raised their voices — even in the film's biggest fight scene.
