Partnership facts

• K. R. Vijaya was already a star when she agreed to do Thenmazhai (1966). Mukta V. Srinivasan was a newcomer. She insisted he be cast as her hero after seeing him in a stage play. The director was nervous, but she refused to budge.
• On the set of Ninaivil Nindraval (1967), Vijaya would deliberately flub her lines to make Srinivasan laugh. He had a deadpan delivery, and she said his struggle to keep a straight face made her performance sharper. They turned each other's mistakes into the scene's best moments.
• After Thavaputhalvan (1972) wrapped, the two didn't speak for nearly a decade. A personal rift — never publicly explained — kept them apart. They only reunited for Iru Medhaigal (1984) after a mutual friend locked them in a room until they sorted it out.
• Iru Medhaigal (1984) was the first Tamil film to feature a female protagonist who openly rejects marriage without a villain or tragedy. That script was written specifically for Vijaya, and she brought Srinivasan in to play the man she turns down. The film directly inspired the 1990s trend of 'strong woman' roles in Tamil cinema.
• Mukta V. Srinivasan once said in a 1985 interview: 'Vijaya taught me that acting is not about delivering lines. It's about listening. She would pause mid-dialogue just to watch my reaction. I learned silence from her.'
