• Director C. V. Rajendran paired them for the first time in 'Ranga' (1982) because he wanted a contrast — Vijaya's dignified, suffering wife opposite Silk Smitha's bold, vampish presence. He told press that putting them in the same frame was like 'lightning and thunder meeting.'
• On the sets of 'Sumangali' (1983), Vijaya would quietly rehearse her lines alone, while Smitha would walk up and improvise a new dialogue on the spot. Vijaya later admitted Smitha's spontaneity forced her to stay sharp — she couldn't rely on her usual methodical prep.
• During the shoot of 'Tharaasu' (1984), Vijaya noticed Smitha was exhausted from back-to-back item numbers in other films. She started bringing extra idlis from her home tiffin for Smitha every morning. Smitha never forgot that — she mentioned it in a 1985 interview as 'the only kindness I got on set.'
• Their last film together, 'Iru Medhaigal' (1984), was the first Tamil film to explicitly show a widow remarrying without villainizing the second wife. The script was written specifically to give both actresses equal screentime — a rarity then. It directly influenced K. Balachander's 'Sindhu Bhairavi' (1985).
• Vijaya once told a fan magazine: 'Silk would walk into a scene looking like a storm. I had to be the calm that holds the house together. We never competed — we just held opposite ends of the same rope.'
