The Prem Chopra & Amjad Khan partnership

From Lootmaar (1980) to Virodhi (1992). The played out closed with Virodhi in 1992. It started with Lootmaar (1980).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 86% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Naseeb; the 1990s to Virodhi. Prem Chopra acted in every film; Amjad Khan acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They only shared screen space in the late '80s and early '90s, long after both were established villains. By then, Prem Chopra was playing older, quieter characters, while Amjad Khan was still the loud, menacing force. Their pairing was less a clash of titans and more a passing of the torch — the old guard meeting the new king.
  • In 'Inteqam' (1988), Amjad Khan played the main villain while Prem Chopra played a corrupt lawyer. Their only scene together is a tense courtroom exchange where Chopra's character tries to outsmart Khan's. Chopra later admitted in an interview that Khan's booming voice threw him off his lines — they had to reshoot the scene twice because Chopra kept laughing at Khan's exaggerated delivery.
  • Despite playing rivals on screen, the two were close friends off it. Prem Chopra once said that Amjad Khan would call him 'bhai' and they'd often share a meal together between shots. On the sets of 'Santosh' (1989), Khan even brought homemade biryani for the entire crew — a gesture Chopra later recalled as 'typical of his big-hearted nature.'
  • Prem Chopra said about Amjad Khan: 'He was the only villain who could make me nervous on set. Not because he was intimidating — but because he was so good that I had to raise my own game.' He said this in a 2017 interview with The Times of India.
  • Their third and final film together, 'Virodhi' (1992), was also Amjad Khan's last released film before his death later that year. Prem Chopra attended his funeral and later said that working with Khan in that film felt 'bittersweet' because Khan was already visibly unwell. The film itself flopped, but it remains the last time two of Hindi cinema's most iconic villains shared a frame.
