Partnership facts

• Prem Chopra was the one who pushed for K. Bapaiah to direct Maqsad (1984). Bapaiah was a Telugu director with zero Hindi hits at that point. Chopra convinced the producers that Bapaiah's massy style would work for a Hindi audience. It did — Maqsad became a sleeper hit.
• On the set of Swarag Se Sunder (1986), Bapaiah would shoot Prem Chopra's villain scenes in one take. Chopra later said Bapaiah never asked for retakes — he just trusted Chopra to deliver the menace exactly as written. That trust made Chopra relax and give his most natural villain performances.
• Their third film together, Mard Ki Zabaan (1987), was the first Hindi movie where Bapaiah cast a then-unknown Telugu actor in a supporting role. That actor was Brahmanandam. This was Brahmanandam's Hindi debut — and he went on to become a comedy legend in both industries.
• Prem Chopra and K. Bapaiah never had a formal contract for any of their four films. They shook hands on the deal. Chopra would show up on set, Bapaiah would hand him the dialogue sheet, and they'd shoot. No written agreements, no lawyers — just a handshake that lasted four movies.
• Prem Chopra once said about Bapaiah: 'He never told me how to act. He just said, "Prem ji, aap villain hain, aapko pata hai kya karna hai." And I did it.'
