The Mithun Chakraborty & Tej Sapru partnership

After 8 years apart, they came back together for Sher-E-Hindustan (1997). They didn't share a set between 1989 and 1997. From Laparwah (1981) to Tabaahi: The Destroyer (1999).

The ran closed with Tabaahi: The Destroyer in 1999. It started with Laparwah (1981).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Laparwah; the 1990s to Devta. Mithun Chakraborty acted in every film; Tej Sapru acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • In 'Sher-E-Hindustan' (1997), Mithun played the hero and Tej played the villain. But here's the twist — Tej's character actually gets the better of Mithun in their first fight scene, which was rare for a Mithun mass movie. The director said he did it to establish Tej as a credible threat.
  • Tej Sapru has said in interviews that Mithun personally recommended him for the villain role in 'Devta' (1998) after their first film together. Mithun told the producer, 'He's the only one who can match my speed in action.'
  • Their first collaboration, 'Sher-E-Hindustan' (1997), was originally supposed to star a different villain. But Mithun saw Tej's work in a Punjabi film and insisted the director replace the original actor. That's how Tej landed the role.
  • In 'Tabaahi: The Destroyer' (1999), Mithun and Tej shot a 12-minute hand-to-hand combat sequence in one continuous take. No stunt doubles. No cuts. The director later said they both refused to stop even after a minor injury to Tej's shoulder.
  • The fight choreography from their 'Devta' (1998) climax was directly copied by a Bhojpuri film two years later. The producer of that film admitted in a trade magazine that he 'lifted the entire sequence' because audiences loved the Mithun-Tej face-off so much.
