Partnership facts

• Senthil was a stage actor with zero film experience when Ra. Sankaran cast him as the lead in 'Amman Kovil Kizhakale' (1986). Sankaran took a huge risk — the producer almost pulled out when he saw Senthil's audition.
• On the sets of 'Velundu Vinaiyillai' (1987), Sankaran would let Senthil rewrite his own dialogue in the local dialect. That freedom turned Senthil's natural comic timing into the film's biggest weapon — and made Sankaran's scripts feel more grounded.
• After 'Sevagan' (1992) flopped, Sankaran didn't call Senthil for seven years. Senthil later said he thought their partnership was over. Then out of nowhere, Sankaran showed up at his house with the script for 'Azhagarsamy' (1999). They shot it in 22 days.
• Senthil once told a magazine: 'Sankaran sir never told me I was good. But he kept casting me. That was his way of saying it.'
• The success of 'Amman Kovil Kizhakale' (1986) directly led to a wave of village-based family dramas in Tamil cinema through the late 80s. At least three other directors copied its template within a year.
