• Gemini Ganesan personally requested V. S. Raghavan for the role of the father in 'Ramu' (1966). Raghavan was initially hesitant because he thought his screen image was too stern for a soft father figure. Ganesan convinced him by saying the film needed that exact authority to make the emotional beats land.
• In 'Shanti Nilayam' (1969), Raghavan would deliberately pause his dialogue delivery to let Ganesan's micro-expressions react first. Ganesan later told a magazine that Raghavan's timing taught him how to act with silence — something he'd never learned from any other co-star.
• During the shoot of 'Kaviya Thalaivi' (1970), Raghavan and Ganesan shared a room at a lodge in Tenkasi for three weeks. They would rehearse scenes at 5 AM every day before the crew arrived. Ganesan's driver later recalled that they never once argued — they just sat and read lines like old college friends.
• The success of 'Punnagai' (1971) directly led to the casting of Raghavan as the strict father in Ganesan's next solo hit 'Thirumalai Deivam' (1973). That film's director said he only cast Raghavan because he saw how Ganesan's comic timing in 'Punnagai' was elevated by Raghavan's deadpan reactions.
• Gemini Ganesan once said about Raghavan: 'He was the only actor who could make me feel like a student on set. I'd finish a scene thinking I nailed it, and he'd just raise an eyebrow — and I'd know I had to do it again.' He said this in a 1975 interview with 'Kalki' magazine.
• After 'Deivam' (1972), the two never worked together again. But Raghavan attended Ganesan's daughter's wedding in 1980, and Ganesan was the only actor from his generation who visited Raghavan during his final illness in 1988. Their families still exchange Deepavali sweets every year.
