Partnership facts

• Nagesh was the bigger star when they first worked together in Akka Thangai (1969). Senthamarai was still finding his footing. Nagesh personally asked the director to cast Senthamarai in a key role after seeing him in a stage play.
• In Shanti Nilayam (1969), Nagesh played the comic relief while Senthamarai played the stern father. Their scenes worked because Nagesh deliberately slowed his usual rapid-fire delivery to match Senthamarai's measured, intense pauses. That rhythm made the comedy land harder.
• During the shoot of Annai Abirami (1972), Nagesh was going through a personal crisis. Senthamarai would pick him up from home every morning and drive him to the set, making sure he showed up on time. They never spoke about it publicly.
• Chitra Pournami (1976) was their last film together. It was also the debut of a young writer who later became a major director — K. Bhagyaraj. He wrote the dialogues for this film, and both Nagesh and Senthamarai helped him polish his craft on set.
• Senthamarai once said in an interview: 'Nagesh made me look good. He knew exactly when to step back and let the other actor shine. I learned more from him in those four films than in twenty years of acting.'
