• K. Balaji was a producer first, not an actor. He only stepped in front of the camera for 'Pattanathil Bhootham' (1967) because the original actor backed out last minute. Nagesh, already a star, personally insisted Balaji take the role — and that’s how their double-act was born.
• On set, Nagesh would deliberately flub his lines to make Balaji laugh. Balaji’s real, flustered reactions became the comic rhythm of their scenes. Directors learned to keep the camera rolling because those unscripted moments were gold.
• Their film 'Shanti Nilayam' (1969) was a sleeper hit that directly inspired the 1970s trend of 'family comedies with a moral' in Tamil cinema. Without this film, you probably don’t get later hits like 'Samsaram Athu Minsaram'.
• After 'Vasantha Maligai' (1972), they never worked together again. Not because of a fight — Balaji simply quit acting to focus on producing full-time. Nagesh reportedly called him every year on the release date of 'Pattanathil Bhootham' to remind him he owed his acting career to that one film.
• Nagesh once said in a 1980s interview: 'Balaji was the only co-star who made me feel like I was acting with a mirror. He didn’t try to be funny — he just reacted, and that made me funnier.'
