Partnership facts

• Janagaraj was already a popular comedian when he recommended Kovai Sarala for Uyarndha Ullam (1985). The director wanted a fresh face for the female lead's comic sidekick. Janagaraj insisted she could match his timing. That film became their first together.
• In Gangai Karai Paattu (1995), Janagaraj would deliberately flub his lines to make Kovai Sarala break character. She'd then improvise a comeback that left the crew in splits. The director kept those takes because the laughter felt real.
• On the sets of Gopala Gopala (1996), the two had a running bet: whoever laughed first during a scene had to buy the other a box of Mysore pak. Sarala lost so often that Janagaraj started calling her 'Mysore Sarala' on set.
• Their double-act in Udhavikku Varalaamaa (1998) was so popular that the producer greenlit a spin-off comedy track featuring just the two of them. It never got made, but the script still circulates among old-timers as a lost gem.
• Kovai Sarala once said in a 2002 interview: 'Janagaraj taught me that comedy is not about making people laugh. It's about making them forget they're watching a film. With him, I never acted. I just reacted.'
• In Piriyadha Varam Vendum (2001), their last film together, Janagaraj slowed down his usual rapid-fire delivery to match Sarala's more measured rhythm. She later said that was the first time she felt they were truly dancing, not just trading punches.
