Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in 'Japanil Kalyanaraman' (1985) because director S. P. Muthuraman needed a comic pair that could match the film's madcap energy. Ramasamy was already a veteran, but Sarala was still finding her footing — he apparently told the crew on day one, 'Let her lead the scene, I'll follow her rhythm.'
• In 'Uyarndha Ullam' (1985), Ramasamy deliberately slowed down his delivery to match Sarala's natural timing. He told her off-camera that her pauses were funnier than his punchlines — so he started leaving gaps in his lines for her to fill with reactions. That back-and-forth became their signature.
• During the shoot of 'En Kadhal Kanmani' (1990), Ramasamy would bring Sarala filter coffee from a specific shop in Kodambakkam every morning. She later said in an interview that he never missed a single day — even when his scenes weren't scheduled.
• Sarala once said about Ramasamy: 'He taught me that comedy is not about shouting — it's about listening. He would whisper his lines to me before a take and say, "Now you react to that whisper." That's how I learned to act with my eyes.'
