Partnership facts

• They first met on the sets of Thanikudithanam (1977) because the director, S. A. Chandrasekhar, needed a comedian who could match Y. G. Mahendra's rapid-fire dialogue delivery. Thengai Srinivasan was brought in last minute after the original comedian dropped out.
• In Murattu Kaalai (1980), Y. G. Mahendra would deliberately pause mid-sentence during rehearsals, forcing Thengai Srinivasan to fill the gap with improvised lines. That habit became their signature — the audience never knew which part was scripted.
• Their double-act in Sakalakala Vallavan (1982) directly inspired the comedy track in the 1990s TV series 'Junction' — writer Crazy Mohan admitted he modeled the bickering-uncle dynamic after their back-and-forth.
• On every film set, they shared a single cup of filter coffee between shots — Thengai would take the first sip, Y. G. Mahendra the second. They never explained why, but the crew knew not to touch that cup.
• Y. G. Mahendra once said in a 2005 interview: 'Thengai was the only actor who could make me break character. I'd be mid-dialogue, he'd raise one eyebrow, and I'd lose it. We'd have to reshoot the whole scene.'
