The Avtar Gill & Rakesh Bedi partnership

After 16 years apart, they came back together for Pagalpan Next level (2023). They didn't share a set between 2007 and 2023. Their work runs across 4 decades of Hindi cinema.

From Saath Saath (1982) to Pagalpan Next level (2023). Their most recent film, Pagalpan Next level, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Saath Saath; the 2020s to Pagalpan Next level. Avtar Gill acted in every film; Rakesh Bedi acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first met on the set of Saath Saath (1982) when both were relative newcomers. Avtar Gill later admitted he was intimidated by Rakesh Bedi’s theatre background and spent the first two days just watching him rehearse before saying a word.
  • In Ek Jaan Hain Hum (1983), Bedi kept breaking character by laughing at Gill’s deadpan delivery. The director finally told them to just roll with it — so the scene where Bedi’s character can’t stop giggling while Gill stays stone-faced is actually real, not scripted.
  • After Raahee (1987) flopped hard, the two didn’t speak for nearly a decade. They only patched things up in 2005 when they ran into each other at a dubbing studio and Bedi bought Gill a chai. Sarhad Paar (2007) was their comeback together.
  • Parbat Ke Us Paar (1988) was the only film where they played brothers — and it directly inspired a young Imtiaz Ali to write his first short story about sibling rivalry. He’s mentioned this in a 2014 interview.
  • Rakesh Bedi once said in a 2008 radio chat: 'Avtar is the only actor who can make me forget my lines. We’d be in the middle of a scene and I’d just stare at him, thinking, how does he do that with just one eyebrow?'
  • In Pagalpan Next Level (2023), their first film together in 16 years, Bedi deliberately slowed down his comic timing to match Gill’s more measured rhythm. He told the director: 'If I go fast, he’ll look lost. Let me come to him.'
