The Rohini Hattangadi & Smita Patil partnership

Between 1980 and 1988, they barely worked apart — 8 films in 8 years. For 8 years, a Rohini–Smita film arrived almost every year. The work is uneven: Arth (7.8) at one end, Akarshan (4.1) at the other.

From Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai (1980) to Akarshan (1988). Chakra (1981, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

The shape of the work

Rohini Hattangadi acted in every film; Smita Patil acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • For 'Chakra' (1980), director Rabindra Dharmaraj cast Smita Patil first, then asked Rohini Hattangadi to audition for the role of the mother. Rohini was so nervous she flubbed her lines — but Smita, who was already a star, insisted the director give her another take. That second take got her the part.
  • On the set of 'Chakra', Smita Patil would deliberately break character mid-scene to throw Rohini off — not to sabotage her, but to force her to react in the moment. Rohini later said that Smita's unpredictability made her a sharper actor because she could never rely on rehearsal.
  • During the shoot of 'Hum Do Hamare Do' (1984), Rohini was pregnant and struggling with morning sickness. Smita would bring her homemade ginger tea from her own kitchen every morning before call time. They stayed close friends until Smita's death in 1986.
  • Rohini Hattangadi once said: 'Smita didn't act with you — she acted at you. You had to catch up or get left behind. I learned to run faster because of her.'
  • Their only comedy together, 'Hum Do Hamare Do' (1984), was a rare lighthearted outing for both — and it directly inspired director Basu Chatterjee to cast them again in a similar double-act in an unproduced script. That script never got made because Smita passed away two years later.
