Partnership facts

• Silsila (1981) was the only time they shared screen space with Amitabh Bachchan. Shashi and Sanjeev played Amitabh's elder brother and best friend respectively — making it a rare triple-threat casting coup that Yash Chopra pulled off by personally convincing both to adjust their dates.
• In Sawaal (1982), Shashi played the suave conman while Sanjeev played the weary cop chasing him. The trick was that Sanjeev deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery to make Shashi's fast-talking charm pop more — a rhythm they worked out over chai breaks on set.
• Shashi and Sanjeev were close enough that Sanjeev would crash at Shashi's house whenever he was in Bombay without a booking. Shashi's wife Jennifer would cook Sanjeev's favourite Gujarati thali — a ritual that started during Swayamvar (1980) and continued till Sanjeev's death.
• "Sanjeev could make you laugh with just a raised eyebrow. I'd often break character because he'd do something unexpected mid-scene. We'd have to reshoot because I couldn't stop giggling." — Shashi Kapoor, in a 1995 interview with Filmfare, recalling their Pakhandi (1984) shoot.
• Their pairing in Swayamvar (1980) was so well-received that the director, B. R. Chopra, immediately greenlit a second film with them — but swapped their roles. That film was Sawaal (1982), where Shashi played the villain and Sanjeev the hero, a rare role reversal that became a talking point in film circles.
• They almost never worked together. Sanjeev was initially reluctant to sign Swayamvar (1980) because he thought his character was too similar to his role in Trishul. Shashi personally visited his house, sat on his sofa, and said, "Do it for me, yaar. I'll owe you one." Sanjeev agreed the same evening.
