The Pandu & Lakshmi partnership

After 18 years apart, they came back together for En Uyir Kannamma (1988). They didn't share a set between 1970 and 1988. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Maanavan (1970) to Dhaya (2002). It started with Maanavan (1970).

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Maanavan; the 2000s to Lovely. Pandu acted in every film; Lakshmi acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Pandu was a struggling assistant director when he cast Lakshmi as the lead in Maanavan (1970). It was her first Tamil film — and his first film as a director. They basically learned the ropes together.
  • On the set of En Uyir Kannamma (1988), Pandu would let Lakshmi rewrite her own lines in Tamil. She was a Telugu speaker, but she had a natural ear for dialogue. He said she made every scene sound more real than what he wrote.
  • After Lovely (2001) bombed hard, Pandu called Lakshmi and apologized for the script. She told him not to worry — she'd already forgotten the film. They didn't speak for two years after that.
  • Maanavan (1970) launched Lakshmi as a Tamil star. Before that, she was only known in Telugu. Pandu's film gave her the breakthrough that led to her iconic role in Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal just a few years later.
  • Lakshmi once said in an interview: 'Pandu never treated me like an actress. He treated me like a co-writer. That's why I kept coming back.'
  • For Dhaya (2002), Pandu wrote the female lead specifically for Lakshmi — but she almost said no because the role was too small. He convinced her by saying the film needed her name to get funded. She did it as a favour.
