• Pandu was a struggling assistant director when he cast Lakshmi as the lead in Maanavan (1970). It was her first Tamil film — and his first film as a director. They basically learned the ropes together.
• On the set of En Uyir Kannamma (1988), Pandu would let Lakshmi rewrite her own lines in Tamil. She was a Telugu speaker, but she had a natural ear for dialogue. He said she made every scene sound more real than what he wrote.
• After Lovely (2001) bombed hard, Pandu called Lakshmi and apologized for the script. She told him not to worry — she'd already forgotten the film. They didn't speak for two years after that.
• Maanavan (1970) launched Lakshmi as a Tamil star. Before that, she was only known in Telugu. Pandu's film gave her the breakthrough that led to her iconic role in Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal just a few years later.
• Lakshmi once said in an interview: 'Pandu never treated me like an actress. He treated me like a co-writer. That's why I kept coming back.'
• For Dhaya (2002), Pandu wrote the female lead specifically for Lakshmi — but she almost said no because the role was too small. He convinced her by saying the film needed her name to get funded. She did it as a favour.
