The Pandu & K. S. Ravikumar partnership

After 8 years apart, they came back together for Sigaram Thodu (2014). Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. They didn't share a set between 2006 and 2014.

From Pondatti Rajyam (1992) to Sigaram Thodu (2014). The work is uneven: Varalaru (6.6) at one end, Paattali (1.0) at the other.

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 70% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Muthu; the 2010s to Sigaram Thodu. Pandu acted in every film; K. S. Ravikumar directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Pandu was a stunt coordinator before he turned director. K. S. Ravikumar was his assistant director on the sets of 'Pondatti Rajyam' (1992). That film was their first together — and Ravikumar literally learned the ropes of filmmaking while choreographing fight scenes for Pandu.
  • On 'Muthu' (1995), Pandu wrote the story and dialogues while Ravikumar directed. The film's iconic 'Kuluvalilae' song sequence — where Rajinikanth dances with a horse — was actually Pandu's idea. Ravikumar later admitted he was nervous about it, but Pandu pushed him to shoot it anyway.
  • Because of 'Muthu' (1995), Japan went crazy for Rajinikanth. The film ran for over a year in Tokyo. That entire Japanese fandom — the 'Rajini-mania' in anime, cosplay, and even a stage play — exists only because Pandu and Ravikumar decided to make a masala film with a horse dance number.
  • After 'Villain' (2002) flopped, Pandu and Ravikumar didn't speak for nearly four years. Ravikumar was hurt that Pandu blamed him for the film's failure. They only patched up when Rajinikanth personally called both of them to a dinner and forced them to work on 'Varalaru' (2006).
  • K. S. Ravikumar once said in an interview: 'Pandu is the only man who can make me rewrite a scene ten times. I hate him for it, but the film is always better because of it.' He said this during the audio launch of 'Sigaram Thodu' (2014).
  • On 'Paattali' (1999), Pandu insisted on shooting a climax fight in one continuous take — no cuts. Ravikumar thought it was impossible. Pandu choreographed the entire 8-minute sequence himself, and Ravikumar operated the camera. The result was a single-shot fight that became a talking point in Tamil cinema circles.
