• K. Shankar was already a veteran director with 50+ films when he cast Lakshmi in 'Raja Rishi' (1985). He picked her specifically because she could carry the weight of a mythological role — and she was the one who pushed him to make it a full-length feature instead of a short.
• On the sets of 'Mupperum Deviyar' (1987), Lakshmi would often rewrite her own lines in Tamil to make them sound more natural. Shankar let her do it — he trusted her ear for dialogue more than his own writers.
• Lakshmi and Shankar had a standing ritual: before every shot, she would adjust his director's cap and he would tap her shoulder twice. Crew members said it was their silent 'good luck' sign.
• Their third film 'Thambi Thanga Kambi' (1988) was the first Tamil film to feature a female protagonist who openly rejects an arranged marriage and walks out — a plot point that directly inspired a wave of similar 'rebel heroine' roles in the early 90s.
• Lakshmi once said in a 1990 interview: 'Shankar sir never shouted at me. He would just close his eyes and say, "Do it again, but this time mean it." That silence was scarier than any yelling.'
