• Jaishankar was already a star when he agreed to do Anbukkor Annan (1971), but he insisted on N. S. Maniam as his sidekick — Maniam was a stage veteran with zero film experience at that point. The director took a risk on Jaishankar's gut call.
• On the sets of Unakkum Enakkum (1972), Jaishankar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Maniam laugh — Maniam's spontaneous comic timing then set the rhythm for the actual scene. Jaishankar called it 'warming up the engine'.
• Their double-act in Malligai Poo (1973) directly inspired director S. P. Muthuraman to cast them again in Ponvandu (1973) — that film's success then convinced producers to greenlight a whole string of buddy-comedies in Tamil cinema through the mid-70s.
• After every film wrap, Jaishankar would drive Maniam home in his own car — no driver, no assistant. They'd stop at the same tea stall near Maniam's house in T. Nagar and split a single cup of filter coffee, talking about the next day's shoot.
• Jaishankar once told a magazine: 'Maniam doesn't act — he just stands next to me and the comedy happens. I'm the straight man only because he makes me look straight.'
• In Gaslight Mangamma (1977), Maniam improvised a whole monologue about a missing chappal during a tense scene — Jaishankar stayed in character and started counting his own fingers in response. The director kept the take because the offbeat rhythm became the scene's highlight.
