Partnership facts

• They first faced off in Vilakketriyaval (1965) because director C. V. Sridhar needed a villain who could match Jaishankar's cool intensity. Ashokan got the part after Sridhar saw him in a stage play — and the two actors ended up improvising the climax fight without rehearsal.
• In Bhavani (1967), Jaishankar deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery to let Ashokan's explosive anger land harder. Ashokan later admitted that Jaishankar's calm made him raise his own intensity — they built tension by playing opposite speeds.
• Their 1969 film Manasatshi was the first Tamil movie to use a split-screen climax for a confrontation scene. That technique was directly copied by two later directors in the 1970s for their own villain-hero face-offs.
• During the shoot of Uyirmel Asai (1967), Ashokan's father passed away. Jaishankar quietly paid for the funeral and didn't tell anyone until a journalist dug it up years later. They never discussed it on set.
• Ashokan once told a fan magazine: 'Jaishankar made me a better actor because he never tried to outshine me. He gave me space to be loud.' He said this in a 1979 interview about their last film together, Taxi Driver.
• In Thunive Thunai (1976), they swapped their usual roles — Jaishankar played the hot-headed cop and Ashokan the calm mastermind. The director said they rehearsed for three days just to unlearn their own habits.
