The Thengai Srinivasan & Durai partnership

Between 1975 and 1982, they barely worked apart — 5 films in 7 years. From Avalum Penndhane (1975) to Nalanthana (1982). The spanned closed with Nalanthana in 1982.

It started with Avalum Penndhane (1975).

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Sadhurangam; the 1980s to Maria, My Darling. Thengai Srinivasan acted in every film; Durai directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Durai was a newcomer director when he cast Thengai Srinivasan in 'Avalum Penndhane' (1975). Thengai was already a stage veteran. Durai later said he was nervous directing him on day one — Thengai broke the ice by cracking a joke in Tamil about the director's nervousness.
  • In 'Sadhurangam' (1978), Durai wrote a long monologue for Thengai's character. Thengai rewrote it in one night, cutting it by half. Durai kept the rewrite. That scene became the film's most talked-about moment.
  • Their 1980 film 'Maria, My Darling' was one of the earliest Tamil films to use a non-linear flashback structure. Durai credited Thengai's insistence on 'keeping the audience guessing' for that choice. No one else in Tamil cinema was doing that structure then.
  • On every shoot, Thengai would bring homemade snacks from his wife's kitchen and share them with Durai during lunch breaks. Durai later said those snacks were the only thing that kept him sane during the chaotic shoot of 'Asai 60 Naal' (1976).
  • After 'Nalanthana' (1982), they never worked together again. No fight — Durai just moved to TV serials, and Thengai's health declined. But Durai visited Thengai in the hospital every week until he passed away in 1988.
