The 1960s belonged to Buthisaligal; the 1980s to Kadal Meengal. Thengai Srinivasan acted in every film; K. A. Thangavelu acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Director K. Balachander paired them for the first time in Buthisaligal (1968) after seeing them separately in stage plays. He bet that their contrasting comic styles — Srinivasan's deadpan, Thangavelu's manic energy — would bounce off each other perfectly. The bet paid off: the film was a sleeper hit.
• On the sets of Nam Naadu (1969), Thangavelu would deliberately flub his lines to make Srinivasan break character. Srinivasan never cracked — he'd just stare at Thangavelu with that stone face until the crew cracked up. That stare became their signature bit.
• They shared a room during the shoot of Sumathi En Sundari (1971) in a small lodge in Tenkasi. Every night, they'd rehearse the next day's scene by acting it out in whispers so the other guests wouldn't complain. The hotel owner later said they never once argued — just laughed.
• Their double-act in Uzhaikkum Karangal (1976) directly inspired the comedy track in the 1980s blockbuster Nallavanukku Nallavan. The director of that film admitted he rewatched their scenes five times to study how they traded punchlines without stepping on each other's timing.
• Thangavelu once told a magazine: 'Srinivasan doesn't act. He just stands there and lets the comedy happen around him. I have to work twice as hard to keep up with his stillness.' He said this at a 1977 film awards night.
• After Kadal Meengal (1981), they never worked together again. Not because of a fight — Thangavelu's health was failing. But Srinivasan visited him every week at his home in Chennai until Thangavelu passed away in 1994. Their last conversation, according to family, was about a script they'd planned to do together.
