• Suruli Rajan was a popular comedian when he was cast opposite C.I.D. Sakunthala in 'Anbu Thangai' (1974). The director paired them because he wanted a comic relief track that also had romantic tension — unusual for a family drama. Sakunthala later said she was nervous acting with a star comedian, but Rajan deliberately flubbed his lines on the first day to make her laugh and break the ice.
• In 'Aayirathil Oruthi' (1975), Suruli Rajan and Sakunthala played a bickering couple. Rajan would deliberately overact in rehearsals, then pull back during the actual take — forcing Sakunthala to match his energy and then underplay her reactions. The director said this push-pull gave their scenes a natural, lived-in rhythm that no other pair in the film had.
• Their third and final film together, 'Vandichakkaram' (1980), was a sleeper hit in rural Tamil Nadu. The film's success directly led to a wave of 'comedy couple' pairings in early 80s Tamil cinema — most notably, the team of Thengai Srinivasan and Manorama, who cited Rajan and Sakunthala's timing as their blueprint.
• After 'Vandichakkaram' wrapped, Suruli Rajan and Sakunthala never worked together again — not because of a fallout, but because Rajan shifted focus to character roles and Sakunthala moved into television. They remained close friends, and Sakunthala was one of the few people Rajan called from the hospital before his death in 1995.
