• Manohar was a stage veteran and a known face in villain roles. Vijayakumar was a rising star. Director M. G. Ramachandran personally paired them for 'Ulagam Sutrum Valiban' (1973) — he wanted Manohar's raw intensity to push Vijayakumar's softer screen presence into a new gear.
• In 'Idhaya Veenai' (1972), Manohar played the heavy-handed father, Vijayakumar the rebellious son. Manohar deliberately underplayed his scenes — he told Vijayakumar on set, 'You carry the emotion, I'll just stand and react.' That restraint made Vijayakumar's outbursts land harder.
• Their only comedy together, 'Engal Thangaraja' (1973), was a sleeper hit that convinced producers to cast Manohar in comic roles — something he'd never done before. He went on to become a go-to comedian in the 1980s, directly because of this film.
