Partnership facts

• Manohar was already a star when he cast Vijayalakshmi as his heroine in 'Vallavanukku Vallavan' (1965). But here's the twist: she was his first choice, not a backup. He personally insisted she be signed after watching her in a small role in another film.
• On the sets of 'Iruvallavargal' (1966), Manohar would deliberately slow down his dialogue delivery so Vijayalakshmi could match his rhythm. She later said he 'gave her the space to breathe' in scenes — a rare thing for a male lead in the 60s.
• Their fifth and final film together, 'Uyirmel Asai' (1967), was the first Tamil film to feature a female protagonist who openly rejects the hero's proposal — a plot point Vijayalakshmi fought to keep when the producer wanted a 'happier' ending.
• After 'Edhirigal Jakkiradhai' (1967) wrapped, Manohar and Vijayalakshmi never spoke again. No fight, no fallout — he simply moved to a different production house, and she retired from acting the same year. Neither ever explained the silence.
