Partnership facts

• Muthuraman was a rising star when he signed Punnagai (1971). Vasu was a debutant director. Vasu later admitted he was terrified directing a known hero — Muthuraman calmed him down by saying 'just tell me what to do, I'll follow.'
• In Maru Piravi (1973), Vasu wrote a role that required Muthuraman to play two contrasting characters. Muthuraman insisted on doing both without body doubles or makeup tricks. Vasu shot the split-screen scenes in one take — a technical gamble that paid off.
• After Avalum Penndhane (1975) wrapped, Vasu and Muthuraman never worked together again. No fallout — Vasu just shifted to producing, and Muthuraman moved into character roles. They remained friends, but never planned another film.
• Punnagai (1971) was the first Tamil film to use a then-new technique: a song sequence shot entirely in a single continuous take. Vasu and Muthuraman rehearsed it for three days. That scene became a reference point for later directors like K. Balachander.
• Vasu once said in an interview: 'Muthuraman never asked me why. He just asked when. That trust made me a better director.'
