• Neelakantan cast Muthuraman in Ethaiyum Thangum Ithaiyam (1962) after seeing him in a small role in another film. Muthuraman was so nervous on the first day that Neelakantan had to sit him down and walk him through every single shot for the first week.
• On the set of En Annan (1970), Muthuraman would quietly rewrite his own dialogues in the margins of the script. Neelakantan never stopped him — he said Muthuraman's instinct for colloquial Tamil made the scenes land harder with audiences.
• Oru Thaai Makkal (1971) was the first Tamil film to feature a double role for Muthuraman — a gimmick Neelakantan pushed for because he wanted to prove his actor could carry two distinct characters in one frame. It worked so well that Muthuraman went on to play double roles in at least five more films.
• After Oru Thaai Makkal released, Neelakantan and Muthuraman never worked together again. No fight, no fallout — Neelakantan simply shifted to producing, and Muthuraman's career exploded. They stayed cordial but never made a fourth film.
• Muthuraman once told a magazine: 'Neelakantan sir taught me that acting is not about shouting louder than the other actor. It's about knowing when to whisper.' He said this in a 1985 interview about his early mentors.
