The M. R. Radha & S. A. Ashokan partnership

After 14 years apart, they came back together for Taxi Driver (1978). They didn't share a set between 1964 and 1978. From Indira En Selvam (1962) to Taxi Driver (1978).

It started with Indira En Selvam (1962). The spanned closed with Taxi Driver in 1978.

The shape of the work

The 1960s account for 80% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Indira En Selvam; the 1970s to Taxi Driver. M. R. Radha acted in every film; S. A. Ashokan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Indira En Selvam (1962), almost didn't happen. The director wanted a bigger star for Radha's role. Ashokan personally convinced the producer to cast Radha, saying he'd work for free if it flopped.
  • In Kannadi Maligai (1962), Radha played the comic sidekick while Ashokan played the hero. But Radha kept improvising lines that made Ashokan break character mid-scene. The director kept those takes because the audience loved seeing Ashokan laugh on screen.
  • After Koduthu Vaithaval (1963), Radha and Ashokan made a pact: whenever one of them got a solo hit, they'd insist the other be cast in their next film. That's how En Kadamai (1964) got made — Ashokan's success in a previous film forced the producer to bring Radha in.
  • Their 1978 film Taxi Driver was the first Tamil movie to feature a real taxi chase through Chennai streets. The stunt coordinator later said Radha and Ashokan insisted on doing the driving themselves — no doubles. That scene inspired a whole wave of Tamil road-action films in the 80s.
  • Ashokan once told a magazine: 'Radha would make me forget my lines because I'd be too busy watching him. He didn't act — he just lived the scene. I had to work twice as hard to keep up.'
  • They never spoke for 12 years after En Kadamai (1964). A misunderstanding over a salary dispute. They only reunited for Taxi Driver (1978) because the director locked them in a room and refused to let them out until they shook hands.
