• Devika was already a star when she agreed to do Engirundho Vandhaal (1970). But she insisted on a fresh face for the male lead. The director picked R. Muthuraman, then a newcomer. That film launched him as a hero.
• On the sets of Veguli Pen (1971), Devika would quietly correct Muthuraman's dialogue delivery. He later said she taught him how to pause for effect. She set the rhythm; he followed her lead.
• During the shoot of Agathiyar (1972), Devika and Muthuraman would rehearse their scenes in the car on the way to the location. No one else was allowed. They called it their 'private workshop'.
• Muthuraman once said in an interview: 'Devika made me look good. She never let me act alone — she acted with me.' He said this about their work on Engirundho Vandhaal.
