Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Peyveedu (1984), almost didn't happen. Director R. Sundarrajan originally wanted a different actor for the lead. Karthik, then a newcomer, personally lobbied for the role and got it. Nizhalgal Ravi was already cast, and that's how the pair first met on set.
• In Velicham (1987), Nizhalgal Ravi played the brooding, intense cop while Karthik was the loose-cannon sidekick. Ravi later said in an interview that Karthik's natural comic timing forced him to loosen up his own performance — he started improvising one-liners between takes, something he never did before.
• During the shoot of Idhaya Thamarai (1990), the two shared a room in a small lodge in Kodaikanal for three weeks. They would rehearse scenes at night by candlelight because the power kept cutting. Karthik later said that's where they became real friends, not just co-stars.
• "Ravi anna would correct my diction even when the director didn't notice. He taught me that acting is in the pause, not the dialogue." — Karthik, in a 2019 interview about working with Nizhalgal Ravi on Sattathin Thirappu Vizha (1989).
• Their 1997 film Sishya was the first Tamil movie to feature a then-unknown actress named Jyothika in a supporting role. She was spotted by director Sasi during the shoot and later became a major star. Both Ravi and Karthik recommended her for the part.
• In Pooveli (1998), their last film together, the two actors swapped their usual roles: Nizhalgal Ravi played the emotional, vulnerable friend while Karthik took the angry, action-driven part. They deliberately reversed their on-screen personas to challenge each other. The director said they argued for a whole day about who should play which role.
