The Nizhalgal Ravi & Roja Selvamani partnership

After 16 years apart, they came back together for Pulan Visaranai 2 (2015). They didn't share a set between 1999 and 2015. From Uzhaippali (1993) to Pulan Visaranai 2 (2015).

It started with Uzhaippali (1993).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Veera; the 2010s to Pulan Visaranai 2. Nizhalgal Ravi acted in every film; Roja Selvamani acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first shared screen space in Veera (1994), but neither was the lead pair — Ravi played a supporting villain role while Selvamani was a side character. The director, Suresh Krissna, paired them in a single scene that ran barely three minutes, but their energy made him promise to cast them together again.
  • In Nenjinile (1999), Ravi played a cold-blooded antagonist and Selvamani played his victim. Ravi later admitted in an interview that Selvamani's raw fear in the climax scene was so real it made him flinch — she refused to rehearse, insisting on a first-take shock, which forced him to match her intensity without preparation.
  • Despite playing enemies in all three films, Ravi and Selvamani became close friends during the Veera shoot. Selvamani once said Ravi would drive her home after late-night shoots because she was scared of the dark — a habit he kept up even after they stopped working together.
  • Their reunion in Pulan Visaranai 2 (2015) — after a 16-year gap — directly inspired director V. Samuthirakani to cast them as estranged siblings in his 2017 film Thondan. He told press he loved how their real-life warmth bled through their on-screen hostility.
  • Roja Selvamani told a Tamil magazine in 2015: 'Ravi anna is the only co-star who never once made me feel like a newcomer. Even in Veera, when I was nobody, he treated me like an equal. That's why I said yes to Pulan Visaranai 2 without even reading the script.'
