The Nagesh & K. Shankar partnership

After 8 years apart, they came back together for Uzhaikkum Karangal (1976). They didn't share a set between 1968 and 1976. From Panathottam (1963) to Mangala Vaathiyam (1979).

Uzhaikkum Karangal (1976, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. The unfolded closed with Mangala Vaathiyam in 1979.

The shape of the work

The 1960s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Chandhrodhayam; the 1970s to Uzhaikkum Karangal. Nagesh acted in every film; K. Shankar directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • K. Shankar discovered Nagesh as a stage comedian and cast him in 'Panathottam' (1963) after watching him perform in a drama troupe. Nagesh was so nervous on the first day of shoot that Shankar had to calm him down by saying, 'Just act like you do on stage, but don't look at the audience.'
  • Shankar deliberately wrote long, single-take monologues for Nagesh in 'Kalangarai Vilakkam' (1965) because he knew Nagesh could hold the camera without blinking. Nagesh would pace the set, muttering the lines to himself, then deliver the entire speech in one go — no retakes needed.
  • After every film wrap, Shankar would hand Nagesh a handwritten note listing three things he did well in the movie. Nagesh kept all those notes in a steel box at home. When asked why, he said, 'He never praised me in front of others. But those notes were my Oscars.'
  • The success of 'Kudiyirundha Koyil' (1968) directly led to Shankar casting Nagesh in a rare dramatic lead role in 'Uzhaikkum Karangal' (1976). That film proved Nagesh could carry a non-comedy film on his shoulders, opening the door for his later serious roles in other directors' movies.
