Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in 'Hum Tere Ashiq Hain' (1979), but the pairing that actually clicked was in Manmohan Desai's 'Naseeb' (1981). Desai cast Hema as the nightclub singer and Amjad as the villain who chases her — and the 'John Jani Janardhan' song sequence became the template for their future films together.
• In 'Desh Premee' (1982), Amjad Khan played a ruthless smuggler while Hema played a double role. The trick they used: Amjad would deliberately dial up his menace in their scenes, and Hema would respond by making her character more vulnerable — that push-pull made the audience root harder for her.
• Hema Malini has said in interviews that Amjad Khan was one of the few co-stars who never made her feel uncomfortable during intense scenes. On the sets of 'Santosh' (1989), he would break character between takes to crack jokes and make her laugh, just to keep the mood light.
• Their last film together, 'Aathank' (1996), was also Amjad Khan's final released film before his death in 1992. The movie was shot years earlier and sat on the shelf — so Hema and Amjad's last on-screen moment together is a forgotten B-movie that nobody remembers.
• Hema Malini once said about Amjad Khan: 'He was the only villain who could make me laugh between shots. I'd be terrified of him on screen, but off screen he was a teddy bear.'
