The Sivaji Ganesan & S. S. Rajendran partnership

For 10 years, a Sivaji–S. film arrived almost every year. Remarkably even — every film rates between 7.5 and 7.5. From Deivapiravi (1960) to Ethiroli (1970).

Pazhani (1965, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. The spanned closed with Ethiroli in 1970.

The shape of the work

The 1960s account for 89% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Aalayamani; the 1970s to Ethiroli. Sivaji Ganesan acted in every film; S. S. Rajendran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Deivapiravi (1960), was originally offered to MGR. When he declined, the director turned to Sivaji Ganesan, who insisted on bringing his stage rival S. S. Rajendran along as the second lead. That decision launched one of Tamil cinema's most iconic pairings.
  • In Pachai Vilakku (1964), Sivaji played the blind elder brother and SSR played the sighted younger one. Sivaji deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery on set so SSR's more theatrical style wouldn't look rushed next to him. SSR later admitted that Sivaji 'taught me how to pause for the audience.'
  • Despite being box-office rivals, they shared a house in Chennai for two years during the early 1960s. SSR would cook, Sivaji would bring home film scripts, and they'd rehearse scenes together late into the night.
  • Their 1965 film Pazhani introduced a young comedian named Nagesh in a supporting role. Nagesh's performance was so electric that both Sivaji and SSR personally recommended him to other directors, effectively launching his career as a top-tier comic actor.
  • Sivaji Ganesan once said about SSR: 'He was the only actor who could make me forget my lines on set. I'd watch him perform and just stand there, lost in his moment.' He said this during a 1975 stage interview.
  • Their last film together, Ethiroli (1970), almost didn't happen. SSR had walked out of the project mid-shoot after a creative disagreement with the director. Sivaji personally drove to SSR's house, sat with him for three hours, and convinced him to return. They finished the film without another argument.
