The Sivaji Ganesan & R. S. Manohar partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. Remarkably even — every film rates between 6.5 and 7.8. From Mahakavi Kalidas (1966) to Raja Rishi (1985).

Thyagi (1982, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. The spanned closed with Raja Rishi in 1985.

The shape of the work

The 1960s belonged to Mahakavi Kalidas; the 1980s to Thyagi. Sivaji Ganesan acted in every film; R. S. Manohar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Mahakavi Kalidas (1966), almost didn't happen. Director R. S. Manohar originally wanted a different actor for the lead. Sivaji Ganesan heard about the script and personally asked Manohar for the role — he was that keen to work with him.
  • On the set of Engal Thangaraja (1973), Sivaji would often slow down his dialogue delivery to match Manohar's natural rhythm. Manohar, a trained stage actor, preferred a more measured pace — and Sivaji, known for his rapid-fire delivery, adjusted without being asked. That film's comedy scenes still feel like a real conversation because of it.
  • R. S. Manohar was also a director, and he cast Sivaji in three of his own films. But off-screen, Manohar never called Sivaji by his star name. He always addressed him as 'Nadigar Thilagam' (the title Sivaji earned) — even in casual conversation. Sivaji, in turn, called Manohar 'Anna' (elder brother) on every single shoot.
  • Their 1982 film Thyagi was the first Tamil movie to feature a full-length flashback sequence told entirely through a single character's monologue. That technique was later copied by at least three Tamil directors in the 1990s, including in a major Kamal Haasan film.
  • Sivaji Ganesan once said about Manohar: 'He is the only co-star who made me forget my lines — because I was too busy watching him act.' He said this during a stage event in 1984, just months before their last film together released.
