• For Vedham Pudhithu (1987), director Bharathiraja cast Sathyaraj as the villain. But Sathyaraj insisted Ilavarasu play his sidekick — even though Ilavarasu was a newcomer. That film put both of them on the map.
• In Vedham Pudhithu, Sathyaraj played the loud, menacing antagonist. Ilavarasu played his quiet, loyal henchman. The trick: Ilavarasu never spoke unless Sathyaraj finished his line. That silence made Sathyaraj's rage feel bigger.
• After Vedham Pudhithu, Sathyaraj personally recommended Ilavarasu for roles in three other Bharathiraja films. Ilavarasu later said Sathyaraj was the reason he got a career at all.
