The Prakash Raj & Kushboo partnership

Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema. From Pathini (1997) to Varisu (2023). Their most recent film, Varisu, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.

It started with Pathini (1997).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Pathini; the 2020s to Varisu. Prakash Raj acted in every film; Kushboo acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Pathini (1997), was a remake of a Malayalam hit. Prakash Raj was still a newcomer in Tamil cinema, and Kushboo was already a star. She specifically asked the director to cast him — she had seen his work in Telugu and felt he'd bring the right intensity to the husband role.
  • In Chinna Chinna Kannilae (2000), Kushboo played a blind woman and Prakash Raj played her husband. She later said in an interview that Prakash Raj would deliberately slow down his dialogue delivery on set so she could react with her eyes and body language — he adjusted his rhythm to make her performance land better.
  • Prakash Raj and Kushboo have been close friends for over 25 years. When Prakash Raj was going through his divorce in the early 2000s, Kushboo was one of the few industry people he would talk to. She would call him every week just to check in, even when they weren't shooting together.
  • Kushboo once said in a 2018 interview: 'Prakash is the only co-star who has seen me cry, laugh, and lose my temper on set — and still calls me for coffee. That's 25 years of trust.'
  • Their 2009 film Villu was a Vijay mass entertainer, but the real ripple was offscreen: Prakash Raj's performance as the villain in that film directly led to him being cast in the Hindi remake of Singham (2011). The Bollywood team had watched Villu and noted how he held his own against a superstar.
  • In Varisu (2023), their last film together, they played estranged siblings. The director said Prakash Raj insisted on doing the big confrontation scene in one continuous take — because he knew Kushboo's emotional rhythm would peak at the exact right moment if they didn't cut. They shot it in one go.
