The S. P. Muthuraman & Major Sundarrajan partnership

From Anbu Thangai (1974) to Uyarndha Ullam (1985). For 11 years, a S.–Major film arrived almost every year. The work is uneven: Priya (7.8) at one end, Uyarndha Ullam (3.6) at the other.

Vetrikku Oruvan (1979, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. The unfolded closed with Uyarndha Ullam in 1985.

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Priya; the 1980s to Sri Raghavendra. S. P. Muthuraman directed every film; Major Sundarrajan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Muthuraman cast Major Sundarrajan in Anbu Thangai (1974) after seeing him in a stage play. Sundarrajan was a theatre veteran with zero film experience at that point. Muthuraman took a risk that paid off — that film launched Sundarrajan's movie career.
  • On the set of Mogam Muppadhu Varusham (1976), Muthuraman realized Sundarrajan could improvise comedy beats on the fly. He started giving Sundarrajan loose scenes and letting him riff. That became their working rhythm — Muthuraman set the structure, Sundarrajan filled it with live-wire energy.
  • Their film Aadu Puli Attam (1977) directly inspired the 1980s trend of 'double role' comedies in Tamil cinema. Other directors copied the formula, but Muthuraman and Sundarrajan were the first to make it work as a full-length feature.
  • After every film wrap, Muthuraman and Sundarrajan would share a single cup of filter coffee at the same Chennai tea stall near AVM Studios. They did this for all seven films. No exceptions. Sundarrajan once said it was their 'silent contract'.
  • In Priya (1978), Muthuraman deliberately shot Sundarrajan's scenes in long takes without cuts. He knew Sundarrajan's timing worked best when he wasn't interrupted. That film has a 7-minute single-shot comedy sequence that Tamil audiences still quote.
