Partnership facts

• They first met on the set of Manipayal (1973) because the director needed a comedian who could also play a serious role. Jagannathan recommended Thengai Srinivasan, who was then a stage actor with zero film experience. That one recommendation launched his entire film career.
• In Moondru Mugam (1982), Jagannathan played the straight man to Thengai's chaotic energy. Thengai would deliberately flub his lines to make Jagannathan break character — and the director kept those takes because the natural laughter felt real.
• They were neighbours in Chennai for over a decade. Every morning before a shoot, Thengai would knock on Jagannathan's door and they'd walk to the studio together, rehearsing scenes on the way. Neither ever took a separate car.
• Their double-act in Vellai Roja (1983) was so popular that the producer greenlit a spin-off comedy track for them in Thanga Magan (1983) — a rare instance where supporting characters got their own subplot because of audience demand.
• Thengai once said in a 1985 interview: 'If Jagannathan isn't in the scene, I don't know where to look. He gives me the rhythm. Without him, I'm just noise.'
• In Idhayakkani (1975), Jagannathan insisted that Thengai rewrite his own dialogue because the written lines were too 'stagey'. Thengai improvised the entire comedy track in one take — and that scene became the film's most replayed moment.
