Partnership facts

• Ramanna was a producer-director who usually cast big stars. But for Naan (1967), he took a risk on Manorama, who was mostly a comedian then. She got the lead because Ramanna saw her crying in a stage play and decided she could carry a full drama.
• On the sets of Maru Piravi (1973), Ramanna would let Manorama rewrite her own lines. She had a knack for making heavy dialogue sound natural. He trusted her instinct more than the scriptwriter's.
• Thaliya Salangaiya (1977) was the last film they made together. It flopped hard. But the film's theme song became a wedding staple in Tamil Nadu — a direct ripple from their collaboration that outlived the movie.
• Manorama called Ramanna 'Anna' (elder brother) off-screen. He was the one who convinced her to take her first break from acting after a health scare in the mid-70s. She later said he was the only director who cared about her health more than the shoot.
