• Ashok Kumar was already a legend when Vinod Mehra was a newcomer. For their first film together, Jyoti Bane Jwala (1980), Ashok specifically asked the producer to cast Vinod opposite him — he had seen Vinod's work in a small role and wanted to give him a break.
• On the sets of Dial 100 (1982), Ashok Kumar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Vinod Mehra laugh and loosen up. Vinod later said that Ashok's playful teasing helped him stop being nervous around a senior actor.
• Vinod Mehra was a close friend of Ashok Kumar's son, and would often stay over at Ashok's house during the filming of Sumbandh (1982). Ashok's wife would cook Vinod's favourite dal, and the two would play chess late into the night.
• Vinod Mehra once told a film magazine: 'Ashok Kumar is the only co-star who made me forget I was acting. He'd just look at me, and I'd become the character.'
• Their film Chor Police (1983) was the first Hindi movie to feature a car chase through a real Mumbai fish market. The scene was shot without permits, and the crew had to bribe local vendors to not throw fish at them.
