Partnership facts

• Kamal Haasan was already a star when he agreed to do 'Andharangam' (1975) — but V. Gopalakrishnan was a debutant director. Kamal took a risk on a newcomer because he liked the script's psychological twist. That film became the start of a 10-year run.
• On 'Sankarlal' (1981), Gopalakrishnan let Kamal rewrite his own dialogues in the climax. Kamal turned a straightforward revenge scene into a layered monologue about class and justice. That scene is still taught in Tamil cinema workshops.
• 'Kaakki Sattai' (1985) was the first Tamil film to cast Kamal as a police officer. That role directly inspired his later cop avatar in 'Kuruthipunal' (1995) — and every Tamil actor who played a khaki-clad hero after that owes a nod to this film.
• Gopalakrishnan never called Kamal by his name on set. He always addressed him as 'Sir' — even when Kamal was just 20 and Gopalakrishnan was 10 years older. Kamal found it awkward but never managed to break the habit.
