The Kamal Haasan & Sridevi partnership

Between 1976 and 1983, they barely worked apart — 14 films in 7 years. 1979 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 7 years, a Kamal–Sridevi film arrived almost every year.

Remarkably even — every film rates between 7.2 and 8.4. From Moondru Mudichu (1976) to Sadma (1983).

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Padhinaru Vayadhiniley; the 1980s to Varumayin Niram Sigappu. Kamal Haasan acted in every film; Sridevi acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Kamal Haasan personally recommended Sridevi for Moondru Mudichu (1976) after seeing her in Malayalam. Director K. Balachander was hesitant because she was only 13 — Kamal convinced him she could pull off the mature role.
  • In Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), Kamal played a serial killer and Sridevi his victim. He deliberately pushed her to cry on cue without glycerin — she did it in one take. That scene became the film's most talked-about moment.
  • Moondram Pirai (1982) was remade in Hindi as Sadma (1983) with the same pair. That Hindi version launched Sridevi as a pan-India star — she got a Filmfare nomination and Bollywood never stopped calling.
  • During the shoot of Padhinaru Vayadhiniley (1977), Sridevi was still a teenager living with her mother on set. Kamal would rehearse lines with her between shots and make sure she ate proper meals — she later called him her 'first real co-star who treated me like an equal.'
  • Sridevi once said in an interview: 'Kamal taught me that acting is not about reacting — it's about listening. He would pause mid-dialogue just to see what I would do. That silence was my film school.'
  • In Varumayin Niram Sigappu (1980), they played a married couple struggling with poverty. Kamal insisted they shoot the kitchen fight scene in one continuous take — no cuts. Sridevi matched his intensity beat for beat, and the director kept the final print exactly as shot.
