The Ram Gopal Varma & Ajay Devgan partnership

From Company (2002) to Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007). It started with Company (2002).

The shape of the work

Ram Gopal Varma directed every film; Ajay Devgan acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Ajay Devgan was not RGV's first choice for Company. The director wanted a bigger star. But Ajay read the script, called RGV at 2 AM, and said, 'I'm doing this. Don't cast anyone else.' RGV later said that call changed his mind.
  • On the set of Bhoot, RGV deliberately kept the set freezing cold and told Ajay to stay in character as a haunted man even between takes. Ajay didn't break character for 14 hours straight. That's why his paranoia in the film feels so real — he wasn't acting, he was just cold and scared.
  • Company directly inspired Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur. Kashyap has said that watching RGV and Ajay's raw, documentary-style gangster scenes made him realize you could shoot crime in India without gloss. Without Company, no Faizal Khan.
  • After Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag tanked, Ajay Devgan didn't speak to RGV for nearly a decade. Not because of the film's failure — but because RGV publicly blamed Ajay's 'over-the-top' acting for the disaster. Ajay felt betrayed. They only patched up in 2018 at a mutual friend's party.
  • RGV once said about Ajay: 'He is the only actor who can make a villain look like a hero and a hero look like a villain in the same scene. I wrote Company's Malik specifically for that split.'
