Partnership facts

• They first met on the set of Solla Thudikuthu Manasu (1988) because director Mani Ratnam needed a comedian who could match Charlie's deadpan timing. Moorthy was a last-minute replacement after the original actor walked out.
• In Idhaya Thamarai (1990), Charlie would deliberately flub his lines to make Moorthy break character. Moorthy later said that forced him to stay sharp — he never knew when Charlie would throw a curveball.
• During Maamiyar Veedu (1993), the two shared a room at a cheap lodge in Pollachi for 40 days. They'd rehearse scenes at 5 AM before anyone else showed up. Moorthy made filter coffee; Charlie brought newspapers.

• Moorthy always played the straight man who got flustered; Charlie played the calm schemer. In Solla Thudikuthu Manasu, Charlie would pause mid-dialogue and stare at Moorthy until he cracked — that silence became their signature bit.
