• Ranjith was a newcomer when he signed Devayani for 'Marumalarchi' (1998). He later admitted he was nervous directing a heroine who had already done a hit film — so he let her improvise most of her lines in the village dialect, which she nailed.
• In 'Ninaithen Vandhai' (1998), Devayani played a deaf-mute character. Ranjith deliberately gave her no dialogue rehearsals — he wanted her reactions to be raw and unscripted. The result was a performance that critics called the film's only saving grace.
• After 'Bheeshmar' (2003) flopped, Ranjith and Devayani didn't speak for over a decade. They only reconciled when a mutual friend forced them to meet for coffee in 2014 — which led directly to 'Sagaptham' (2015).
• Ranjith said in a 2015 interview: 'Devayani is the only actress who can make a bad script look decent. I owe her for 'Ninaithen Vandhai' — without her, that film would have been a zero.'
• The success of 'Marumalarchi' (1998) directly led to Ranjith being offered his next big project — a film that launched the career of actor Jeevan. Devayani recommended Ranjith to the producer.
