• Their first film together, Vennira Aadai (1965), was originally supposed to star a different heroine. But Jayalalitha, then a rising star, insisted on casting Nirmala — she had seen her in a stage play and felt only Nirmala could match her intensity in the emotional climax. The director gave in.
• On the sets of Ragasiya Police 115 (1968), Jayalalitha would deliberately flub her lines in the first take to make Nirmala laugh. Nirmala, known for her deadpan discipline, would then reset the scene by silently walking to her mark — and Jayalalitha would fall in line. That push-pull became their unspoken rhythm.
• Their pairing in Enga Mama (1970) directly inspired the trend of 'double heroine' comedies in Tamil cinema. Producers started actively looking for two female leads with contrasting energies — one fiery, one serene — after seeing how audiences cheered their banter in that film.
• During the shoot of Annaiyum Pithavum (1969), Jayalalitha and Nirmala shared a small room in a lodge in Tenkasi. Every night, Nirmala would braid Jayalalitha's hair before bed — a ritual they kept up for all five films. Neither ever spoke about it publicly.
• Nirmala once told a magazine in 1971: 'Jayalalitha would finish her shot, then stand behind the camera and mouth my dialogues to me. She knew my lines better than I did. That's how much she cared about the scene.'
