• For Mirch Masala (1987), Ketan Mehta cast Paresh Rawal as the villainous Mukhiya after seeing him in a Gujarati play. Rawal was so intense in the role that Mehta later said he 'couldn't look him in the eye' during the climax scene.
• On Sardar (1993), Mehta deliberately pushed Rawal to drop all his usual comic timing. He made him rehearse Vallabhbhai Patel's speeches in a single, flat tone for weeks — the result was a performance so still that critics called it 'stone-faced genius'.
